But bedtime stories with the kiddo spurred me to thinking more about it. One of our little guy's favorite books of the moment is There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly, based on an old American folk song. For those who haven't heard it, here's a link to the text and a YouTube video of the song.
My favorite line: How absurd! She swallowed a bird. So, the old lady swallowed a fly. It's probably not the most pleasant thing to go down, but not life-threatening either. We don't know why she swallowed the fly, but we do know that she swallowed the spider with a purpose - to catch the fly. Not great but this time it's a little amusing (it wiggles, jiggles, and tickles). By the time she gets to the bird, even the writer agrees that it's ridiculous to swallow a bird just to solve the problem of the fly.
We've been reading the book for a few weeks now and a couple of days ago I had the realization that we were a lot like the old lady in the book. We tried to remedy our significant, yet manageable, mistake by making other reckless choices. It seemed as if the actions we took were helping us to make things right. Unfortunately, it wasn't long before we had consumed our own versions of the bird and cat, and taking a serious look at dogs and cows. If someone was to have read our story they would have seen it also as absurd. It was only grace and love through our faithful family and friends that kept us from reaching a disastrous end.
I've been reading in my devotional book, Streams in the Desert, that faith can be strengthened during the darkest, most difficult times in our lives. It's true that we've come through our recent trials stronger and standing deeper in faith. While I long to continue my spiritual growth, I know that stepping back into this old business relationship would be the equivalent of swallowing a horse. It would mean the end to many things we've worked so hard to rebuild. We've learned many lessons and we know that wisdom will be rewarded just as holding on to faith in the desert is also rewarded.
